SMART
Amalgam Removal
Our office is IAOMT Accredited and our dentists are SMART certified.
SMART is a global health initiative to protect dental patients, dental employees and the global environment from the harmful effects of mercury that is generated during the removal of dental amalgam fillings, which contain roughly 50% elemental mercury.
We use Admira Fusion BPA-free, fluoride-free composite as an alternative to amalgam.
If you are interested in a detox protocol, we can refer you to a third party.

Utilizing the available scientific evidence, the IAOMT has developed extensive safety recommendations for the removal of existing dental mercury amalgam fillings, including detailed protective measures that are to be utilized for the procedure.
The patient rinses with activated charcoal or chlorella before and after the procedure. During the procedure, the patient wears a transparent oxygen mask, eye protection, nitrile gloves, a bib, and a disposable and impermeable gown.
We cut the amalgam filling into chunks and keep it cool. During the removal process, we use a high-volume suction aspirator over the rubber dam and a low-suction aspirator under the rubber dam.
We use an air vacuum during the removal, and our office has an air purifier and ionizer. When finished, we immediately clean the patient’s mouth, disinfected it with a laser, and applied ozone gas over the tooth before the appropriate restoration was placed.
We protect our patients, staff, and office.
Scientific research demonstrates that dental mercury amalgam exposes dental professionals, dental staff, dental patients, and/or fetuses to releases of mercury vapor, mercury-containing particulate, and/or mercury contamination.
SMART Protocol.
“To protect the patient’s skin and clothing, a full body, impermeable barrier, and a full head/face/neck barrier under/around the dam must be utilized.”
